Grant and Lawrence are both 54, which must help, yet, surprisingly for a film that doesn’t clearly feel the need to end every scene with a punchline, The Rewrite manages also to be laugh-out-loud funny.Īs it entered the very nicely structured final half hour – and this is a film all about Third Acts, both literally and metaphorically – I found myself rapidly coming to the conclusion that, in its own quietly understated way, this is one of the best films Grant has ever made (confession time: we’ve been friends since school).
So far, so absolutely standard Hugh Grant romcom you might think, doubly so given it is written and directed by Marc Lawrence, who has already directed him in Two Weeks’ Notice, Music And Lyrics and Did Your Hear About The Morgans?īut slowly and rather wonderfully, it turns out to be… well, a lot more than that, intelligently exploring the misery of the mid-life male condition. In The Rewrite, Hugh Grant plays Keith Michaels, a washed-up Hollywood screenwriter so desperate for a job that he is reduced to teaching screenwriting at an upstate university in New York, while Marisa Tomei plays Holly, an attractive single mum who just happens to desperately want to take his course.

Grant knows how to deliver a line and isn’t afraid to play a sleazeball (albeit a redeemable one) but you keep wishing Richard Curtis was on hand to put better – and crucially funnier – words in his mouth. With its top-notch supporting cast (Janney, Tomei, JK Simmons) The Rewrite couldn’t be entirely unlikable, and does boast several early chuckles, but it remains at best disposably flippant – Josh Radnor’s Liberal Arts is Citizen Kane by comparison. More bafflingly, Marisa Tomei’s sprightly single mom/grad student sees something in him which she doesn’t want to slap – a mystery, frankly. Unsurprisingly, “humourless Jane Austen scholar” (as per the press notes – really) Professor Mary Weldon (Allison Janney, wasted) wants him run off campus. Grant plays Keith Michaels, a chauvinist misanthrope (with a broken heart, natch) who once bagged an Oscar for penning “Paradise Misplaced”, but who is now creepily bedding students with daddy issues.

This decidedly uneven romcom about a washed-up Hollywood screenwriter forced to take a teaching job in out-of-the-way Binghamton, NY, is Hugh Grant’s fourth movie for writer-director Marc Lawrence, the most recent being the laugh-free stinker Did You Hear About the Morgans?, which could/should have been a relationship ender.
